RecommendationsWe have gotten a lot of questions about where to camp or asleep at night in the van. There are several campgrounds around Maui. My favorites are Kipahulu, Wainapanapa (Hana) Hosmer Grover (Haleakala) and Olowalu (Westside) and Poli Poli (upcountry Kula). Use Recreation(dot)gov to book a site 30 days in advance. If you do this, you’ll get a campsite, however it is hard to get a site if you did not plan in advance. If you are unable to, do not worry there are still good options for you. The westside has beaches between Grandmas and Olowalu where you’ll see plenty of free/open car camping on the beach. There are also portapotties here and since the van has its own shower, it’s a great free option.Maui is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, and exploring the island in a campervan is one of the best ways to experience all that it has to offer. From hiking to surfing, and from snorkeling to stargazing, there are countless outdoor adventures to be had on this tropical island. One of the most popular outdoor activities in Maui is hiking, and there are many incredible trails to explore. The Haleakala National Park offers a variety of hikes, including the famous Haleakala Summit Trail, which takes you to the top of the island's highest peak. The Pipiwai Trail in the east Maui is also a great option, leading you through lush bamboo forests and to the majestic Waimoku Falls.Maui is also known for its world-class surfing spots, such as Ho'okipa Beach Park and Honolua Bay. With a campervan, you can easily park near the beaches and catch the best waves. For those interested in water activities, snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters of Maui is a must-do. The Molokini Crater is a popular snorkeling spot, where you can see a variety of colorful fish and coral reefs. Finally, stargazing in Maui is an unforgettable experience. The island is home to one of the world's best observatories, the Haleakala Observatory, which is located atop a dormant volcano. With clear skies and minimal light pollution, camping in a campervan in the Haleakala National Park allows for incredible views of the night sky.Overall, a campervan is an excellent way to experience all the outdoor adventures that Maui has to offer, giving you the freedom and flexibility to explore the island's natural beauty at your own pace.CAMPING RELATED:

Other things to noteIn recent years, there has been a cultural pushback against tourists staying in campervans in Hawaii. Many local residents view these campervans as a form of "overtourism," and they worry that they contribute to overcrowding and environmental degradation. Some have also expressed concerns that campervans are contributing to a larger trend of overtourism that is changing the cultural landscape of the islands. As a result, there have been efforts to regulate and even ban campervans in certain areas. However, others argue that campervans provide a unique and sustainable way to experience the islands, and that with responsible use and management, they can be a positive addition to Hawaii's tourism industry. Do your part to be a respectful of this dynamic and sensitive to local culture and ecology. Dont be afraid to ask questions. It's important to be mindful of this as you tour around in Maui. The RIGOROUS RACCOON is great because it has a smaller footprint, and is also more incognito. Please mind the sand in the van. No pets.
Happy to store a suitcase or two while you're off adventuring.

The Rigorous Racoon is a great small truck with all you need, bed, stove, small frigde, some drawers for clothes, dishes, food and even some showering water! We loved being able to camp up Haleakala in Hosmer Grove or in Kipahulu at the end of the road to Hana, allowing us all the stops we wanted along the way. It's well kept and well organized!

Booking the camper van was a FANTASTIC experience! It was our first attempt at the van life experience and visiting Maui. I wasn’t sure what to expect since the entire experience was new to us, but Nathan and his partner made it very easy by recommending many places to visit and see. I highly recommend booking this van if you're open to an adventurous time in Maui.
